John Merrill Kirkman shares a deeply moving message about the atonement of Jesus Christ and the true meaning of repentance. Drawing from Doctrine and Covenants 19, this episode reminds listeners that Christ’s suffering was real, personal, and done completely out of love. Repentance is not punishment—it’s relief. Jesus Christ already carried the pain, guilt, shame, and burden so we wouldn’t have to carry them alone. This powerful devotional invites listeners to stop holding onto what Christ already paid for and instead be reconciled to God through Him.

He suffered, so we don't have to. This is John Merrill Kirkman with Welcome with the Savior Podcast Daily Episode. There are moments in life when we underestimate what Jesus Christ actually went through for us. In Doctrine of Covenants 1918, the Savior himself describes his suffering. He says, He trembled because of pain, bled at every pore, and suffered in both body and spirit. This wasn't symbolic. This was real, overwhelming agony, far beyond anything we can fully comprehend. And then comes the why. Verse 16, I've suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent. That changes everything. Because sometimes we think repentance is about punishment, but it's actually about relief. It's an invitation to let him carry what we were never meant to carry alone. Jesus Christ is not weight, but Jesus Christ is relief. The Apostle Paul teaches in 2 Corinthians 5, verse 21, that Christ, who had no sin, was made to be sin for us so that we could become righteous. In other words, there was a divine exchange of sorts. He took our place so we could stand clean before God. Wow. That's mind blowing. And Peter goes on to remind us in 1 Peter 1 19 that we weren't redeemed with temporary things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, a perfect and spotless sacrifice. So when we delay repentance, when we hold on to guilt, when we hold on to shame, when we think we just need to do better on our own, we're missing the gift. Christ already paid the price. And in Doctrine Covenants 19 19, even after all the suffering, Jesus says, Nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook. He chose it, He finished it out of love for you, my friend. So the invitation today is simple and powerful. Be reconciled to God. Come back. Turn to Him. Lay it down. Be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. I like that word reconcile. It means restored to friendship. Because He didn't just suffer with you, He suffered for you. So you don't have to carry it anymore. Remember, Jesus Christ isn't weight, He is relief.
